Building Science Principles (Day 1)

This intensive course is designed for professionals with a solid background in residential construction and the complete build process. Whether you are a builder, energy advisor, framer, general contractor, developer, designer, or simply have an interest in high-performance homes, you will gain essential insights and advanced techniques that elevate your expertise in building science. There are eight modules with quizzes to reinforce key concepts and a comprehensive exam covering all modules. A minimum pass mark of 75% is required to successfully complete the course.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand moisture dynamics and control methods in high-performance homes.
  • Evaluate and implement effective air tightness strategies.
  • Assess the performance of windows, doors, and other fenestration elements.
  • Analyze the design and performance of below grade walls and foundations.
  • Explore the principles behind above grade wall construction.
  • Develop strategies for efficient ceilings and attic insulation and ventilation
  • Examine mechanical systems including heating & cooling, ventilation, and domestic hot water.
  • Investigate renewable energy generation options and their integration into residential designs.
